Here it is! The Midsummer Ritual

  • Jun. 16th, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Following up on Pam's post about writing up the Midsummer ritual.

We borrowed extensively from the resources on the ADF website, did some additional research and wrote some stuff up together. It is fun writing ritual with you spouse.

If you are interested, I have posted the whole thing HERE.

The Prayer of the Stoic

  • Jun. 11th, 2009 at 11:25 AM

A recent series of posts on a Stoicism list led me to write the following prayer:

By my faith in logos, my trust in phusis and my hope of eudaimon, may I gain the courage to face the world and its visicitudes.

Through acting virtuously, towards virtuous ends, for virtue's sake, may I be granted the serenity of knowing that I am in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.

As I subject appearances to assent, acts to reservation, and practice to examination, may I receive the wisdom upon which to build my days.

I will be adding this to my morning prayers (which Pam and I say together before our shrine)

If anyone has any questions about what any of it means, I would be happy to explain (or come to my session at Summerlands!)

Cheers

More on Words of the Ancient Wise

  • Jun. 1st, 2009 at 1:14 PM

While it is no secret that my heart (Pam) and I are both aspiring Stoics, I realized (after reading her post) that I really havent introduced our blog very well. We both come from a strong Christian background and did a sort of Bible study every morning over our coffee, where we would talk about the relevance and meaning of a passage (hang on there is Pagan point to this). When we moved from Christinanity to Paganism, that morning meeting where we talked about important things kinda disappeared, and we felt the loss.

Some time later we 'discovered' Stoicism and realized how well it integrated into our Pagan beliefs (we are both very big on Hellenism), and started stumbling through some of the key texts. Then one day, lo and behold, we came across a little volume called "Word of the Ancient Wise" This book contains daily readings from Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. We revived the coffee meeting and have been reading a passage each day since January. We don't always agree with the passages, but they always provoke interesting discussion.

Now recently (I do ramble on, don't I?) I came across a Blog where someone was posting the contents of Dracula (which is written in the form of dates letters and journal entries). She would post each passage on the day it was written, giving you a 'real time' feel to the story. This got me thinking. Hey I have something that has dates associated with it!! (See previous paragraph if you are confused)

So here it is, the Words of the Ancient Wise, in daily blog format. I am interesting in opinions, dicussion or whatever. Pam and I will be putting our 2 bits in daily, as comments, and all are welcome to join.

http://wordsoftheancientwise.blogspot.com/

When this is done, I plan to create a new one with passages from Seneca, Diogenes Laetius, and others, depending on where I can find them.

Cheers.

So with the stones that I purchase at Wellspring, I completed my 'Restored' Greek Alphabet Oracle. I still have some work to do, but I am considering making sets for sale, should anyone care to purchase a set rather than make their own. So tonight, I did my first RGAO reading. Going on instinct (and probably past influences) I pulled three stones out of the velvet bag that holds them and came up with Past: Θ (Theta), Present: Ϡ (Sampi), Future: Ψ (Psi). The question was "What should I focus on for the coming week?" Here are my interpretations.

Past

Θ

θ

Theta

9

“You have the helping Gods {Theoi} of this path.”
Helping: propitious, defending; path: road, course, way.
The “way” may be a concrete road, a plan of action, a spiritual path, a way of life, etc. In any case, the Gods who oversee this way will help and defend you, so you may go forward with confidence; you are under divine care because you are following your destiny.

I interpret this to mean that my work on the ADF requirements and other projects has the approval of the Gods. This is good news, because I am spending a lot of time working on various projects.

Present

Ϡ

ϡ

Sampi

(Ancient)

900

“Like the sea { θάλαϡαν – thalassan} rushing over you,  you will be overwhelmed by emotion.”

Overwhelm [κατακλύζω]: overrun, inundate, deluge; Emotion [συγκίνηση]: thrill, pathos

You will be feeling a new welling of emotion or begin to have some vivid dreams. Your emotions have no purpose yet, but are filled with raw potential,  These initial passions, feelings, thoughts and needs that can be directed into something more. They represent hope, a possiblity, an action to take. You can use them, or leave them behind.

To me this seems to follow the same path as earlier, I am filled with hope and energy for these projects, sometimes missing sleep to get things done. If I don’t take advantage of the time that I have them now, I will lose them (leave them behind)

Future

Ψ

ψ

Psi

700

“You have this righteous judgment {Psêphos} from the Gods.”
Righteous: just, fitting, meet, fair; judgment: resolve, decree.
Literally, a psêphos (Lat. calculus) is a stone used for divination, voting, counting, and similar purposes, so this oracle refers to collective judgment rather than individual judgment. This implies that the majority of the Gods concur in this judgment, and that this judgment is appropriate, fair, and righteous, though there is no implication that the result is that desired by the querant.

The Gods have made a righteous judgement on this path. I see now that all of these together may be talking about the Restored Greek Alphabet Oracle. The divination stone in the last, tied to the future, with the current energy to see it through, and the approval of the direction I have taken in the past, really means to me that I should follow this.

So, another project to do. First I finish my set (including instruction book, backed up with as much research as I can muster). Then I start purchasing a small set of supplies to make a couple of sets for sale.

First Kick at The Shrine

  • May. 31st, 2009 at 1:09 AM

Getting my DP requirement ready. The explanation is still being edited (I have to work with my mentor on it) as it is over 2 X the minimun length!! Thought you might like a look at the pics though. There is a link at the bottom of the page that leads to the ritual Pam and I used to set it up, with closeups of each item.

Spring up oh Well

  • May. 20th, 2009 at 7:31 AM

So it's official, Pam and I are heading to Wellspring. This is a little weird for me, heading off to an unknown situation. But I and trying it out, stepping out there. Camping in May is like, well, camping in September. I.e. Risky and cold, but uncrowded.

We are likely bringing Erin along from the grove. Should be, might be, could be fun.

On another note, I came across someone on LiveJournal that has a pdf of Kerenyi's Apollo. Unfortunately the posts stating this are from 2007, so I am hoping that he/she is still checking the account and still has the pdf kicking around and is willing to share it. A lot of hope but other than spending $150.00 ish, that is the only way I will be getting this 74 page booklet that originally sold for $8.50.

Days of Wind and Dandelions.

  • May. 19th, 2009 at 7:52 AM

Cold, rainy, windy. May? I can't get out to mow the lawn because whenever I am home, it is raining, has just rained, or is threatening to rain (electric mower, so taking no chances). My yards are starting to look like scenes out of Deathworld. Had a wonderful time at Pagan Breakfast last week. Even found the name of a short story I was looking for "Waiting for the Olympians" by Fred Pohl. (Thanks Duncan!) We are still toying with the idea of going to Wellspring this weekend. Great fun, but expensive. Got to see if we can pull it off. In talking to the folks on the ADF lists, Michael Dangler suggest I present at Summerlands. Took me by surprise, but being the teacher that I am I rose to the occasion and suggested Stoic ethics in an ADF framework. Waiting to see if he thinks it is a good idea. Met a wonderful couple @ the breakfast, and had them over for dinner last night. It was great to meet them, and we will certainly be getting together again. Finally, we were also able to meet up with the Grove (Red Maple) and have a great general discussion. It was even decided to run a Dedicant's session once a month with topics picked at random thereafter. Could mean quite a long stretch for some of it, but I may work ahead a bit as I am keen on getting it done.

Time to get serious about about the DP. It is the first step in the Path.

I am back

  • May. 16th, 2009 at 9:51 AM

After 33 weeks of silence, I am returning to active service. It remains to be seen just how active.

Things I have been up to.

Well I finished the Olympian Gods Photo Gallery.

I started a Stoic readings blog called Words of the Ancient Wise.

Been working away. And possibly planning to attend Wellspring with my love.

As always, comments are welcome.

Bard in training

  • Sep. 17th, 2008 at 3:15 PM

So I started my lessons on Saturday. I told my coach my goal and she was thrilled. Proceeded to give me all Grade 9 vocal stuff right away, including a Vocalize that reminds me of something french or russian (weird combo). I recorded her playing the melody line and background so that I can practice in the car on the way to and from work (and I am!)

I also have my first three pieces to learn. For those of you not familiar with Classical Art Song, I have provided recordings of them, sung by the inimatable Beniamino Gigli. (clicking on the link will open Windows Media Player or some such) The recordings are from the late 40's so pardon the quality.

I still have to find a piano/theory teacher, but one step at a time.

A New Toy

  • Sep. 17th, 2008 at 2:45 PM

(Transfered from my LifeDrive - Original Entry: 08-09-16 11:50 pm)

My first entry using my LifeDrive. I am going to try  and centralize all my activities here, kind  of a 'one ring to rule them all' affair.

This morning was the second day of my personal moring ritual. My mini-shrine is set up with a small bowl of water, a carving of a tree called "Tree of Life", the large pillar candle that Lee gave me, and a small offering bowl. I light the candle that Lee gifted me, then repeat my first oath.  I then drop a few coins into the offering bowl.

Now I know this isnt regulation ADF, but at this stage, it isnt meant to be. It is just a very simple reminder of the commitments I have made.

Prior to the meeting tonight, I wrote out my oath using a caligraphy pen and ink on paper, which I placed in an envelope. This was going to be an important moment for me and I wanted to treat it with respect.

Later, Pam and I met with Red Maple grove so that I can give my  First Oath. I was really touched by their support.

There was a short pre-ritual, where Michael (our senior druid) briefly explaned the ADF cosmology to two new commers (one of whom was my son). I then explained the meaning and structure of my oath. Lee provided me with a huge pillar candle, so that could use it as the flame in the ritual. She also wants me to use it for my personal meditation every morning. She also set up the altar, with a bowl of water and a plant (tree and well) and a bowl of offerings (and a dish to transfer them too).

I read the oath facing east, transfered the offering to the bowl, then took the bowl outside. I then repeated the last lines of my oath as I scattered the offering to the trees.

We then shared a meal together. I received a tarot reading (thank you Erin), and gave three readings (Erin, Dot and Sadie). I also managed to fit in two additional readings for the kids. The readings occupied most of the night. In between the readings, we got together again in the kitchen and the grove toasted my begining on my path.

All in all, a wonderful night.

Why not Excellence?

  • Sep. 14th, 2008 at 10:24 AM

So, I am a bard. I know this. The level of quality and work expected to become a bard in the ADF is actually one of the things that drew me to the ADF. In that spirit, last night, I started up singing lessons, again.

I am studying with a renowned opera coach, with master class lessons with a Maestro (who a world class Operatic Tenor). I have know the coach for three years now, as my wife, son and daughter are all taking lessons with her already. I walked in last night and stated my goal. I am aiming for ARCT Performer. This is a Royal Conservatory of Music grade level (above Grade 10). It is going to be hard work. Vocally I am at a good start, being able to perform some Grade 9 pieces. I will however, need to learn how play piano ( I don't know how to at all right now) and theory (I haven't read a piece of music properly for 25 years). This is the work of several years, but really, why not excellence?

The First Oath

  • Sep. 12th, 2008 at 11:27 AM

It is complete. I have written my first oath. I plan on giving on Sunday night (the 14th) which co-incidentally falls on the full moon. The text of it is here.

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=d5hvnt4_62djssp6fq

Thanks

  • Sep. 11th, 2008 at 6:38 AM

You have all been so encouraging with the diet tips that I wanted to send a shout out!
THANK YOU!

I need to find time to get myself out the door more and walking. That being said, my wife and I have put the brakes on the fast food madness. Last night we actually had soup and sandwiches for dinner! NORMAL FOOD! Imagine, not premade, preprocessed and precooked. It was certainly nice.

Thanks again all.

Starting Slow

  • Sep. 10th, 2008 at 8:55 AM

Someone recently commented on my cry for help (health wise). Their sage advice was to start slowly.  My employer keeps cup-a-soup and flavoured oatmeal in stock at all times, as well as different sodas and juices. The temptation of grabbing something quick during the workday is strong. Some time ago though I picked up a desktop water dispenser. It actually holds the recommended 8 cups of water (2 liters). So out with the pop and in with the water. Small step.

Next step, coffee.

I NEED SLEEP

  • Sep. 10th, 2008 at 6:45 AM

That's it. I am going on a diet, I am exercising and I am getting in better health. I am going to do something about this now and focus on my health before it becomes serious.

Have I got poetry on the brain?

  • Sep. 9th, 2008 at 9:47 AM

Working my way to my First Oath and of course, I have decided to cast it in the form of an Elizabethan Sonnet. I just like the rhythm and sound of it. Once the words and emphasis are right, it just seems to roll off the tongue. I am thinking of it as more than just a one off thing though. One of the suggestions in the Wheel of the Year was to read and listen to Brandon's daily recitation of his own first oath.

I am thinking, once the oath is written, of using it as a morning devotional. I can picture myself, before my altar/shrine (right now a metal owl, representing one of my patrons, Athene, a candle some incense, a bowl of water) reciting these verses. It would act as a reminder of who I am and what I have vowed.

The Senior Driud of my grove (Red Maple) has suggested we get together with other members of the grove this sunday, and I have asked if I can deliver my first oath in their presence, as witnesses. In anticipation of that, I have written the last couplet of the oath already. I realize that it may still need work.

This solemn pledge I bind upon my  life
As witnessed here by Gods, and Grove, and Wife.

Week 1 - The Interview

  • Sep. 8th, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Pam and I chose to complete our first week of the Dedicant program with an interview based on the questions Michael listed in his guide. Our son, Adam, conducted the interview and we have captured it. I know that this isn't part of the Requirements for the DP, but as Michael says, 'The answers to these questions will help light your way when the path becomes dark and difficult, and they will help keep you going through those tough times.'

For anyone interested, you can find the interview here (http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=d5hvnt4_61d8kd59gb)

I will be adding this to my personal website 'The Journey' (https://sites.google.com/site/michelgdaw/Home).

Here is a link directly to the page (https://sites.google.com/site/michelgdaw/Home/the-seminary-at-ár-ndraíocht-féin/the-dedicant-program/the-adf-dedicant-path-through-the-wheel-of-the-year)

Cheers

So, weird thing happened this morning. I was walking the dog and noticed 6 ravens on the lawns to my left. As I walked by they stayed put, only flying up to the roof of the closest houses, but still in sight. One of them made a crick-crick-crick sound (not the usual cawing). As I continued, I turned around to let the dog do her thing, and two of the birds flew over me to land again on my left side.

Now I am new to the idea of Augury, but I am studying Greek Divination, and I was wondering, does it mean anything. Could it mean anything? Could someone help me interpret it.

This morning we went to the local Pagan Brunch. It was great seeing everyone. It is a great event as all of the Pagans from every stripe and path comes by. We keep trying to attend to make sure that we are remain part of the larger community.

We then attempted to hit the book chat, but there must have been some crossed wires, as no-one was there. Oh well. Maybe next time.
